Carbon Replacement

We will be explaining a number of technologies that replace carbon-based fossil fuels with less expensive green-generated electricity.

Mini-splits are air-source heat pumps that heat your house in the winter and cool it in the summer.  These units save money.  They are less expensive to operate than using home heating oil, propane or even natural gas (where available).    We will be partnering with Cape and Islands Self-Reliance in this aspect of the program.

Rebates are available from MassCEC for new or existing homes that meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Have an Eversource account.  Cape Light Compact customers all have these accounts.  You contribute to the Renewable Energy Trust (RET) through this account and are thus eligible for and funding these rebates.
  2. Use the installed air-source heat pump (ASHP) for heating consistently throughout the winter.
  3. Work with a participating installer.  All the installers working with Cape and Islands Self-Reliance are qualified.
  4. Install ASHPs from MassCEC’s list of eligible equipment.
  5. Have had a home energy audit completed within the last four years or have one scheduled within six months of project completion. Please read through our program FAQs for answers to questions about home energy audit requirements and exceptions.

Electric cars represent a huge potential for replacing carbon-based fuels with renewable fuels.  The cost of electricity to power your car is equivalent to gasoline at $1.00 per gallon (less if you are generating the electricity with your own solar panels).  Current cars have a 200-300 mile range.  Having an electric car is the same as waking up every morning with a full tank of gas.

The price of gas is going up again.  By comparison, the cost of electricity is much more stable.
